Do they have to be made from proper worm skin?

Take a nice cross country run to the NEC for the bike show. There you'll have your pick of makes and models and should get a nice 60 quid pair for 30 quid.

I am only a newbie, but during my DAS I have purchased these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Leather-Waterp...QQcmdZViewItem

They are cheap. Only £19.95, the armour is very good including quite hefty wrist armour on the wrist straps. The stitching is strong.

Also, last weekend my hands were sweating during 10oC, plus, I tested the waterproof in them but putting them in water and not a drop leaked through.

Anyway, at that price, I am happy to see how long they last, if they fall apart, least I've not spent much.

I went to Hein Gerricke and bought a nice pair of warm gloves for £30.

They're HG's version of Gortex

How exactly do you get a version of Gortex? (Sorry, couldn't help myself!)

Gortex is a trade name, theres loads of other things ending in -tex that do the same thing.
