15K mile service
I'm fairly new to riding and am on my first bike, the naked '03. Since I got the bike (which I consider more my commuter than anything else), I've performed the regular maintenance work in my apartment's back yard, like oil changes, cleaning, lubing, tire changes as well as simple under-tail mods and such.
Now I've come up to the 15K mark which includes tappet adjustments and throttle valve synchronisation. In reading the manual, it seemed somewhat involved and perhaps not something that would want to be done in a back yard.
My question is, and assuming that I do not race nor intend to in the near future and find that the performance I get from this bike is superb per my limited experience:
* Is the synchronisation and tappet adjustment critical in that it would mess up my SV if I don't do it OR is it something I could hold off on until I hear/see signs of needing it without compromising the bikes integrity.
** Is it a truly involved service that a back yard would not be advisable?
I live in the DC area where I was told that the service is $400. Probably nothing for many of you but I've been feeling the pinch lately and would rather defer non-critical expenses for later.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
