I just can't see how they would work unless a computer is tracking every single number plate to calculate your average speed - someone will tell me in a minute this is exactly what they do! Surely the cost of putting these up is more than they recoup in fines?

Correct - that is EXACTLY how the system works. It is called ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) regisiters you reg at the start and again at the end, calculates the average speed and automatically raises the NIP. It can also check your Tax, Insurance and MOT.
Do they actually work? 3,533 people so far can answer that for the system on the road works on the M1 for the multiple occupancy lane (that's 70 a day being caught)
