What this thread was about was copying them when you haven't actually paid for a copyrighted copy in the first place. THAT is illegal - making a personal copy of something you have paid for ISN'T. Provided you keep it personal and don't share it thats legally fine.

PS. I have 1885 mp3s and growing on my hard disk. And all of them are legal backups of my CDs that I can use if my damn cousin gets hold of any more of my CDs and scratches them to buggery again.
