Some people are just stupid. Surely common sense here would have been to open both gates and then drive across, not stop on the tracks.

Exactly my point.
She was out of the car when opening the gate, and reading the sign. "If the green light is on, open the gate." She also stated there were no lights on.
The fault does not lie with the SatNav unit.
Mind you, that crossing could do with upgrading a little. What if someone leaves the gate open one day?
