They are not too bad, speak very little French but be gracious and try to speak a few words, carry no money in your wallet to pay the fine (ok to have it in your pocket, just make sure theres only ten euros in the wallet then produce the open wallet when asked for money) and often you'll get a "cadeau" (present) because they usually just can't be arsed with taking you to a cash machine.

As for speed cameras don't worry about them unless you are using a French or Luxembourg registered vehicle.

We got stopped once by a patrol car and flashed 4 times on our last trip (my wife is French) and got away with it all.

You can't use the same kind of silly speeds you used to get away with though and if you are in a French vehicle stick to the limits rgidly, there is no 10% plus 2mph like there is here. I was setting cameras off at 10 kph above the limit and my speedo overreads.
