Yes indeedy, it's good stuff to use sparingly. It can be a little firm but does absorb impact extremely well.
Don't scrimp though, the really cheap stuff is pretty rubbishy, pay a little more and get the twin layer ones, last one I got was about £6 IIRC, two different foams in light/dark grey.
If you do want gel pads, I found the cheapest way was from horse tack suppliers, they do big ones for under saddles (sometimes go under the name "numnah"). The one I bought was proper gel inside a tough nylon type cover, some seat modifiers actually use silicone rubber honeycomb but describe it as "gel-pads".
I found the best stuff to seal the edge of the gel pad when cut to size was the pvc tape used to join ventilation ducting (doesn't come unstuck with time). The gel pads are very heavy though.
