I don't know the regs on the matter, but on the pointy, the cover is plastic and weighs absolutely b-all. As you say, I think you'd be hard pressed to get your foot in there; I've always imagined it was more to help keep it clean and stop laces (which you probably wouldn't have on a trackday boot
) and textiles (again, not on a trackday) from getting tangled up in there.
