As said its under the riders seat. Theres two little black plastic infils directly under the seat, undo the allen key bolt and then pop the panels off, then theres a bigger allen key bolt each side that holds the seat on, undo those and then lift the seat off and you'll see the battery.

My bikes smell funny when they are dirty, especially if its wet and the dirt burns onto the hot header pipes, but its not the same sort of ozoney smell you get when something electrical is burning.
