I report big potholes etc to my local council, and usually they're filled in within a few weeks, so take an active approach and give them a ring. I know they should look after their roads, but imagine the cost of having people drive round just looking for holes, reports them and they get fixed, better for both you and others as the roads are safer, and may help keep you council tax lower (as they're not employing people to look for potholes constantly).
