Necessary schmecessary. I've never been on a ride with a marker system and I've only been left behind once. Even then I managed to navigate my own way to the endpoint and meet everyone else. The key is to ride fast enough to keep up with someone who knows where they're going.
I'm unlikely to go, anyway - I'm already taking the SV over for a long weekend a couple of weeks beforehand. Vroom vroom.
