Default It's now a single!

Here's a good one that's got me a couple of splinters in my fingers. Discovered, what to me would be a once in a lifetime oil leak, left hand side crankcase cover. I've never had one of these leak, ever! So, fix leak me thinks, job done. Fire up the bike so she can go play and it's become a single! Runs like a dream on only the rear pot, the front is firing but only intermittently and not hard enough to malke a difference the way it runs. you can tell it's only on one by the exhaust note and the temp' of the headers. As far as I can tell everything in the casing is solid state and has no dicernable connections to disturb, the only disturbable ones are somewhere near the batterybox. Oh and the rev counter has stopped working. The bike is a CAT4 stolen recover that the owner didn't want back.

My questions are:

Where does the tacho pick up it's signal from?
Could this just be a chopped wire that needs sorting?
If so where in the loom is it most likely to have been hacked to get it to go?
Is this a known fault with what I thought was a bullet proof bike?
