I've even heard of people hammering 12 sided sockets onto an offending rounded nut to get if off, but that smacks of a real bodge (and of course there is scope for marking, or even knackering the socket, even if you protect the back end with a rag)!

In my experiance, a 6 sided socket will almost always grip better than a 12 sided one, especially if the nut is past it's best, as it applies force to the flats rather than the points of the nut. As SS points out though, once the axel nut is undone there should be no load at all on that nut.
