Having actually used Vista at work I really do fail to see it as a "step back". XP got all the same flak when it came out "Oh don't do that, stick with Windows 2000" like it or not over the time that Mark's son is at Uni, more and more programs are going to go to Vista only. Flattening it to put on an OS that you're more familiar with is fine and if that's what he chooses to do, great. But to stick with the supplied Vista Business is by no means a bad shout. As he's doing a computing degree it may end up with some mad setup with virtual machines, and a custom install of Linux anyway... But that'll be his son's doing, and thus, up to him to fix when it doesn't work
