Or you can learn how to manual focus, I've got some really great results out of a loaned 50 mm. Sure it's slower than auto focus (and I wouldn't use it for action pics unless I could pre-focus, blablablah), but it's a wonderful portrait lens, aided by the fact that on every Nikon DX camera it's a 75 mm equivalent (short telephoto). Now combine that with the beautiful bokeh when wide open and you can get creamy blurred backgrounds for £80. And stopped down from f/2.8 it's as sharp as they get.

Yes I am learning to take photos using manual focus. However, I find the viewfiender a bit painful sometimes so I always take a backup shot with the manual focus just in case. Some of my best shots from the AR and my trip to australia was using MF.
