Wifi, do you not mean Wimax, which is a open specification technology with a wide frequency range to possibly use. So it is possible to get good speeds from wimax but the more people use it the worse it gets. Again it has the same problem as 3g/hsdpa in getting the data back from the site to a hub. However with wimax it is generally worse as each site covers a lot more people, so if they are all using it then the actual speed each user receives is greatly deteriated. Several less populated countries use it in rural areas to deliver broadband to farmers etc.
Currently in Sweden (where wimax is also deployed) they are actually rolling out HSDPA with 20meg top speeds with real user speeds of around 7meg. The r and d boys and girls are also in the last stages of producing 100meg hardware/software, with eapected user rates around 20meg. Dont expect that for at least 5 years or so.
