What about simple 2-way radios with hands-free kits? If you get ones with AA batteries, you can change them on the road rather than charge a special battery?

I don't know? I too am thinking of way of communicating with pillion which doesn't involve taps, jabs, kicks of knocks. Too prehistoric.
