I remember once that when i bought some new alloy rims and tyres they had to blow them up to 160 psi to get the tyres to pop over the rim beads, and seat properly, but they had the tyres inside a cage to do it, they then let them down to the proper pressure. Might be what happened here, but to not deflate they after is just insane. It,s a wonder they didn't let go.
