I think we'll all agree there isn't likely to be an abundance of healthy livers awaiting transplant. So it's not like they said "we could give you this one, but because you drink heavily we're going to bin it". The doctors must have found someone who needed it just as badly.

With that in mind, let's consider the article that we may be reading now, or a few years from now, had the transplant gone to this 22 year old. Obviously it's quite likely that someone else may have been "condemned" to death- it could be anybody, a middle aged man, a teenage girl, a single mother- and I'm sure their family would be none too happy if they found out where that liver had actually gone.

Everyone deserves a second chance, but when there's only one second chance to give out, and one person is far more likely to make the most of it than another, then imo the difficult decision has almost been made for you.

So when someone says this was unfair, they're really just ignoring what may have happened had the decision been made the other way.
