I think smooth riding is very bad in town. So many hazards like that it seems best way is to brake on path to bring you to a stop just before where someone might be waiting to pull out, then as soon as you have the angle to see it is clear you can give it beans again.
Probably worst sort of riding with regard fuel, consumable wear etc. But it is good balance between fast and safe in town.
