It celebrates the victory of the House of Hanover (ie George III against Bonnie Prince Charlie - a descendant of Charles II) at the Battle of Culloden, and the resulting certainty of the Protestant succession. It basically celebrates slaughter like we have never otherwise seen. It was one of the darkest events in our history, that and the Highland Clearances that followed it. And why celebrate a bunch of Germans?
