I love my crampons, have used them for Ice Climbing, trekking on Ice and even walking to work during the recent winter snow when the pavements froze and lots of folks were falling over.
A boot stiff enough for a walking crampon will provide good support and protect the foot from the ground a little better than a softer boot. However, stiff boots can feel a little unwieldy at first. I would go every where in my Ice boots if I could because of the comfort and support they offer. However with thermal linings and High tops, they bake my feet in about twenty minutes in the summer.
I bought a pair of full leather Hi-Tecs for Carol about 18 months ago and she loves them. I do make sure that they are properly waxed though. Boot polish and then Nikwax to protect the leather, however I do this to all of my boots. If you can bare the look, don't polish off the Nikwax, it protects the boot better that way.
