Apparently the best thing is to try a wide range for best fit (like bike helmets). When I was in cadets I used to do a lot of road-marching and walking (Nijmegen 4-day, 3 peaks) and wore Hi-Tec Magnums. Not very waterproof, if it was going to be boggy I used Berghaus waterproof socks. They were very comfortable, and only rubbed on the back of my achilles tendon, which I cured with Elastoplast. Gore-Tex is best for waterproofing.
