Half of these "I'm thinking of buying X bike, what do people think" threads are merely people toying with ideas. If I was serious about trading up to a different bike, the last place I would start would be a web forum.

You and me both, Luke, but unfortunately there are a few people who rely on the opinions of the more 'experienced' (read - prolific) posters to get their advice from. I can see that if a number of people say "don't buy that bike, they're boring" then they'll not even bother taking one for a test ride. What they have to remember is that on this forum the bias will always be towards the SV650 first, and any other Suzuki second, so if you're asking about a Honda CBR600 there will usually be a negative vibe, but ask about a GSXR600 SRAD and the response will be better. I'd rather own a CBR myself, because they are to me a far better built bike.
Truth be known, Suzuki make average bikes, same as Yamaha make average bikes, Kawasaki make average bikes and Honda make slightly above average bikes as do Triumph - so whoever is asking the question may as well ignore everything negative they hear (with the exception of reliability advice, because that is 99% of the time correct) and just go try for as many bikes as they can for themselves.
