i have not tried one on the SV, but i had one on 1st gen cbr600 for almost 7 yrs, worked great, i never had to adjust it, though if i had to it was quite easy to do.
as for the correct tension, i was told you make it loose, then keep tightening till the cam-chain "chatter" stops, then you go 1/4 turn more and lock it. not sure how exact this approach is, but as i said, 7 yrs/40K (km) without ever having to think about it... so i guess it is close enough
