+1 on the no rucksack.

Fine for a very short while but gets very uncomfortable very quickly, potential to increase injuries should the worst happen and is going to make the handling even worse.

Tank bag, panniers, a top box and packing light are the way to go. Plus as others have said the top box makes it *much* more relaxed for your pillion, no need to hold on and can even have a snooze[1]!
