Could be she's just shy. If she's (er...or he) is still telling her friend, it's because she really is interested.
Put some pressure on the friend. Tell her she's no mate of yours if she won't tell or act like you are really hurt/mad and say she has really hurt your feelings, etc. etc. and tell her not to mention it again if she's not planning on telling you , or you're not speaking to her again if she's going to play with your feelings.
You can get it out of her.
How you go on not knowing?

I had a one once but didn't know it at the time.
Years later she told me she had a big crush on me and used to follow me around, saved pics of me and so forth...and she was drop dead gorgeous.
Wish she had let me know at the time.
I would have killed to go out with her!
