I think the danger here is the link not doing it job properly and letting the chain go whilst riding. ive seen it and its not nice. Why dont you ask your bike shop how much they want if you just get them to do the rivet with their tool. ie ask if you can fit the chain in the car park or some thing and have them rivet it.

or at least do it your self but then get the shop to check it or even go over it with their tool.

This isnt some thing which should be bodged and if you read up on it im sure the chain manufacturer suggests a diameter and shape etc. I was lucky enough to get a tool free with a new chain i brought and it still wasnt easy.
