Not quite...

The new generation 1.4/1.6 turbo petrol engines are close to the mpg and horsepower of a 1.9/2.0 diesel. They are not as peaky as diesels (wider power band) but it's true the torque is less. Lets also face it, when you're stuck behind a diesel the exhaust smells MUCH worse and unless you service it with anal precision it will clatter and smoke more than a petrol.

For the now very minor difference in running costs over an average mileage year I'd choose the driving pleasure of a petrol every time.
