Had a bit of an off 3 years ago. Split my pelvis open (now held together with a metal plate) & broke my back.
I was in hospital for 2 weeks, but off work for 4.5 months whilst I learnt to walk again.
I actually picked my current SV650 up whilst still on crutches & rode from the other side of Derby to Crewe with my son following behind in the car. I had to be helped off at the other end when I got home & I'm not afraid to say that I was absolutely bricking myself.
2 years later I bought a track bike & started racing. I crashed at high speed in my 2nd race & cracked a couple of ribs, but I still continued with test days for a year before selling my track bike, so the fear can be overcome.
I'm still very nervous in the rain when riding, but I just can't leave biking alone, it's my drug.

A friend said to me that you can die crossing the road, plus, read what Talan wrote in Fast Bikes magazine
