I wanted to hire a Harley for getting about on but the distances you're talking are huge and 2bh the roads aren't upto much anyway. A nice hire car with air con and cruise control will be more like it!
But if you want to hire a Harley while you're over there (Fatboy all the way for me) then you've got near Malibu the Snake/Mulholland Highway and loads of winding mountain roads to explore. Thats what we'll be doing once we've seen all the bullsh!t that LA and Hollywood has to offer.
