Yeah the biggest problem I find is partly related to whether you have the most up-to-date maps followed by TomTom and Google probably having different logarithms for calculating routes.
I usually add extra waypoints in to force TomTom down a certain route and scan the route so I have a rough idea of where I'm going and to make sure the waypoints aren't on the wrong side of the dual carriageway etc
On the road I use the TomTom has advice but try to pay more attention to signage as it's word isn't final.
You have to wonder when people follow their satnavs and turn at level-crossings into approachign trains.
