Make sure you back up all your pictures & any other content which is on the iPad but not already saved on another device before doing this!
Restoring the iPad back to factory: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414 is quite a common part of the trouble shooting process for iOS devices pete, when my iPhone started acting up last year the internet basically said to restore to factory settings, then restore to the 'back up' of my phone as it was at the time (with all my contacts & pictures & messages etc.)
