Was talking to a press photographer yesterday - we were comparing the Cannon DSLRs she had with her with my Powershot. Her view (as a pro) is that although a compact or hybrid can do a lot they all take longer to set up and only work at their best in good light. If you're going to be using your kit in challenging situations you are better off going DSLR.
