Perhaps not so much of a mistake. Get wind that someone might report you for growing it, so put it in the front garden and use the defence, "we're old, we didn't know it was illegal...if we did, we would have never put it in the front garden where it would be seen!"
A few giggles and lighthearted media mentions later and they are left alone to grow some more
