Thanks for the link. I think it's the inner element that is the problem. Will have to try it the other way up.
Right, sorted it out now. I had the last two elements the ring way and the innermost one back to front. If you ever need to remove a lens ring, use a rubber glove and a similar size spray can (making sure it domes enough to clear the lens) and gently turn.
