It sounds like your reg/rec has expired. Personally, I'd check the stator and if that's ok just replace the reg/rec. If it is the reg/rec you can go several different routes depending on finances - an ebay Chinese cheapie (which many swear by), an Electrex equivalent or a genuine Shindengen FH020AA (or similar).

They are (mostly) all 5 wire - 3 (ac) from the alternator (usually yellow), 2 (dc) to the battery (red/black).
