I did the front first, then the back later.
What you say is in some ways true - if you don't do the back as well you won't get the full benefit of improving the front. However, the back isnt anywhere near as bad as the front. Also, one of the reasons for doing the front has nothing to do with handling - it will eliminate the massive dive under braking.
Another reason I'd want to do the front first is that you always want the front to grip better than the rear. I'll admit I don't know if doing the rear suspension first would compramise this, but I brought it up just incase.
