wipe surplus off with a rag, preferably not something you're wearing at the time, ideally leave for a while for solvents to evaporate a bit, and then spray with whatever your preferred tipple is.

Spray lubes have a lot of volatile solvents anyway, so they'll carry off the lighter parts of the WD.

Leave for an hour or so before riding it so it doesn't all fly off again.

Paraffin is a lot cheaper than WD40 for cleaning chains, and it's what they recommend, and if you leave it for several hours it'll dry off on its own. Do a search on paraffin and you'll find threads on chain cleaning.
