Engine manufacturers do work closely with filter manufacturers (been there) and there are quite a few aspects to filter construction which can affect the lifetime performance.

While there are numerous well respected filter manufacturers, FWIW I always use OE spec (i.e. Suzuki) filters just because it's a known quantity. You can save a couple of quid with alternative filters which may well be perfectly OK, but it's difficult to know for sure.
As for washable/everlasting filters, don't go there. Original spec filters work just fine if they're changed regularly. Just my 2p.
