I would definitely not tell my insurers about anything where I couldn't claim for it... so if I had third party and crashed on my own, I'd sort it on my own. If I could claim on my insurance or the third party then I'd tell them.
Does my insurer do loads of things to help me maximise my claim, get witnesses when I need them, make sure I'm looked after when it goes pear shaped?... No... instead they wriggle and blame shift and try and get out of fulfilling their part of the contract.
So why should I tell them about anything but a claim? If insurers weren't so scabby then people would perhaps be more honest with them.
