Aye, no point patching an old tyre, it's more work than it's worth.

AS for the slime stuff, I had Ultraseal in my last set... I picked up a hole in the rear at some point which patched itself without ever being evident- I check my tyres every couple of hundred miles and I'd never seen it, and had no severe pressure drop. Now, it could have happened the day before it was discovered (by my dealership, when they took the tyre off before the wheel was coated) or if could have happened any time in teh previous 6000 miles- and it was absolutely fine. It's got a proper plug in now- no reason not to while the tyre was off- and I've got no doubts about it in the slightest.
