I've just fitted a K&N filter on my pointy SV650 SK4 and the bike was running very lean. Remap is a must if you want to get the most out of a performance filter, I found I had to increase it by ~5% throughtout the rev range.
In terms of "feel", you will gain at the top end but lose a little bit of grunt at the lower end. I also noticed the fuel consumption to be improved, especially on motorway trips. I would say that the fuel you save after 2500 miles would be enough to offset the cost of the filter and remap (a little odd considering the remap should feed more fuel into the engine...), but that might just be my bike.
