If you dont know, then you shouldnt really be atempting it yourself. I would either find someone that knows what they are doing, or get it to someone who does. Brakes can save your life and its not worth attempting something that you are not sure of.
Do you have 'feel' in the lever, as in, is it hard, or does the lever come back to the bar?
