So I took my sv650s to get an mot. Passed straight away.i was riding home and the the brake were binding slowing the bike right down like I was riding while pulling the brake lever. I stopped then rode of again and then they released but I had no front brake at all. Luckily I was near home. Parked bike and went down an hour later and I had brake again. Anyone know what could have caused this as scared to ride it in case it happens again. Thanks in advance

I would guess you lost the brakes completely because they had got very hot while you were riding with them on. This can cause the brake fluid to form bubbles which are compressible so the lever no longer has any resistance when pulled. Then when things cool down the bubbles disappear and you have brakes again until the heat builds up once more.
The calipers must be over hauled as theres probably corrosion that is not allowing the pistons to retract properly when the lever is released so the pads rub all the time. Also inspect the pads themselves as they may have been damaged... |

Full caliper service. Pop the pistons out and clean them, check the seals, red rubber grease to re-assemble it all, make sure the pads are ok, fresh fluid and bleed them (patience needed there).

Interesting that it passed the MOT test.

think it would do as the brakes will still be effective until the bubbles form. In fact in this situation Ive had the brakes feel better than normal because the pads are in constant contact with the discs so the brake lever is really solid.
It might even have been the MOT that brought this problem on as by braking hard during the test the pistons could have come out slightly further than usual and then due to the corrosion refused to return... |
