Default Sad for everyone this one...

http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/di...entPK=18991696

Obviously heart goes out to the bikers family and clearly she was at fault, but I cannot help feeling that imposing a custodial sentence is a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. IMHO it is extremely unlikely she will ever get behind the wheel of a car again anyway.

Surely the best way (like someone sensible has said in the comments) is to try and prevent this stuff by better and more often driver training and testing. As a biker and a cage driver I would be more than happy to do this because I take pride in trying to drive and ride as well as I possibly can. Those who don't, need the impetus so accidents like these don't happen.

In addition when you see/hear about scrotes robbing old people in their homes getting a slap on the wrist, it just feels wrong.

What do you think?

I think people fairly rarely get robbed to death, so it's not really a valid comparison. But I do agree it's very sad for all concerned, I'm not sure what purpose will be served by locking her up. But equally, I don't think that people should be treated differently just because of their age, if it had been an 18 year old we'd probably be screaming for blood. Glad I'm not a judge really...

When taken in that context I would agree but I wouldn't mind betting that whats in the report is only part of the truth, like there is nothing there about why she did the U turn in the first place and then there was the reason for not being given a custodial, was that the full truth or just partly

Agree about preventing this sort of thing but that wont raise cash for the local safety partnership, having more speed cameras and less cops on the ground does

Hmmm without knowing the full facts(well more ?), I really wouldn't like to comment.

What I'll say is, I understand mistakes do happen but there are so many stupid/brain dead/idiotic yada yada drivers on the road and we should not automatically go for the "must have paid enough already" line

I'm taking about idiots doing U-turns in the middle of a bend(virtually blind one) on a 40mph road etc......how stupid(being polite) do you have to be to carry out such a manouver

Twice in the last three weeks, idiots have attempted the above in the same stretch of road.

One was very lucky as I realised what the idiot was about to do and instinctively hit my horn. He stopped and guess what? A second later, couple of guys come flying past. He did thank me(and didn't attempt it magain) but still.......

Second idiot made the lady in the inside lane(I was on the outside lane) brake so hard, it wasn't at all funny. That's with a child on board. It wasn't my place to have a go but yep, got a real mouthful form me

If I or my family(touch wood) were to be involved in an incident caused by such drivers, make no mistakes, I would be looking for blood....ok not literally but you get the idea.

I ain't no Saint but some just seem to have over dosed on the "stupid pill"

Tragic.

I can't be too sympathetic though. She killed somebody. Let's face it, it could have been you, it could have been me, it could have been any of us. She admitted causing death by dangerous driving, and that carries a more or less automatic custodial. As Ben points out, we don't know all the facts but the standard of carelessness has to be very high.

It seems a shame to send this lady to jail but at least it show others that there is a punisment for killing people on the roads. I remember the case recently of the doctor who killed a biker going the wrong way up the dual carridgeway and got a suspended sentance. IMO looking really genuinley sorry isnt good enough, because I'm sure people are really sorry when there are faced with a substaincal jail sentance.

RIP

Pretty unfortunate.

Reminds me of the time I was out on a motorway in Ireland, making progress, and an aul dear tootles out onto the motorway, off the ramp doing about 30, and progressed straight out into the over take lane.
And sat at 30.

I blew passed her down the inside, realising how slow she was going. Another lad just behind me, and a car didnt get a read on her extreme slowness until almost too late.

Suffices to say I think it was new underwear time all round.
The lads behind me were easily sitting at 80. It would have been sticky.

I think that this lady was found guilty by a jury. In which case, the sentencing would be stiffer than if she had entered a guilty plea at the first opportunity.

I am unsure about a prison sentence in this case. First conviction etc.

However, the one thing that annoys me is the two year disqualification. It's too short. I have records of all the drink drivers I have arrested and many of them were also banned for two years. Now, without being controversial, many of those have done nothing "wrong" (ie, crashes, killing someone). Often the only reason they are stopped is because of a "feeling" I get.
I feel that if a person is convicted of death by dangerous driving, you should not be on the roads in control of a vehicle ever again.

Disqualified for life.

I dont feel any sympathy for the driver whatsoever. She has taken taken a life, she must face the consequences.

Agree 100% with this, it seems riddiculous that people go to jail for drink driving/ causing death by dangerous driving. And there driving bans are shorter than there sentances, is it possible to get your licence back whilst your inside?
