Hi Northern Ireland folks,
Anyone got an SV650 engine for sale? Perferably the curvy model. Thanks, Phil |

yeah, started last ride out with a ticking noise at around 4000rpm. Then started to lose power, then all of a sudden the engine sounds like a bag of spanners in a tumble dryer. Don't have time to strip engine at the mo and need bike on the road ASAP for NW200.

Sounds like Oil starvation, i had the similar problem with mine, I still have the old one here at home but havent had time to pull it apart.

Oil was quite low on checking. I only filled it a few hundred mile ago so I thought it would be fine. Engine noise is deafening beside the bike, sounds well and truly done!!
Don't know whether to split the bike and sell for spares or try to get a replacement engine. Phil |

Phil,
Could this be a loose cam chain / tensioner failure? |

Not sure about failure reason. Some say oil starvation wrecks the big bearings, although it started as a clicking noise on part throttle at 3-5Krpm. I thought perhaps I just hadn't heard the noise before as I normally ride with ear plugs in but didn't that day. It didn't feel like something just went (like a snapped chain) but that something that was amiss got rapidly worse over a few miles of riding.
My guess is that the valve clearances were off (bike has 23kmiles and I don't think last owner did the valve shims). I assume that perhaps a bit broke off the valve and ended up in the engine and the cylinder is wrecked. When I got home the bike sounded like one of those old 1950s race bikes and the engine was so hot! The smell of burnt oil in the garage this morning was powerful!! P |
