Normally my K8 selects gears very cleanly, and when I go into 1st there's a reassuring clunk (and the leaver doesn't allow you to push it down any more).
When I was riding home from work last night, it stopped selecting 1st cleanly - sometimes it just wouldn't go to it at all no matter how much I pressed down the gear leaver (meaning I had to pull away in 2nd and on one occassion in 3rd which was a bloody struggle!) - sometimes it went into first but the leaver felt spongey (didn't lock out), and once or twice it was fine and went into 1st nicely. Any thoughts? It's a K8 Sport with under 7K miles on the clock (and had both its services on time). Never had this problem before... |

The first thing to check, is whether your chain needs adjusting. If it's too loose then you'll have problems finding the gears. There's plenty of posts about chain adjustment - just do a search. HTH Chin |

Lever is sticky probably, to confirm this try ever-so-slightly lifting the lever before pressing down, if this does the trick then the lever will need removing and lubricating, you could try a squirt of your favourite of course, but I'd just get the lever off and be done with it.

Will try the sticky leaver thing when I next ride. Just checked oil level and chain tension - both fine. Also made sure there's no crap preventing lever/rod movement - again fine.

Check that the clutch cable isn't too slack. A dragging clutch can effect gear changes.

The incorrect oil level can also cause gear selection issues
