Really really simple and I never thought it would cause so much offence.
Take all the bins away ![]() We don't have an office cleaner, Anne and I clean up every weekend. Have been getting fed up of slovenliness - confidential stuff left in bins (and so not shredded), disgusting used chewing gum and lunchtime food leftovers to sort out. I decided to put an end to it all, have a central bin and recycling point, and took the bins away over the weekend. So now everyone has to get up and walk a few steps to put a pile of stuff in the proper bin. I am not Mister Popular this morning. I don't care. |

My brother founded his business as a paperless office. Only one printer for outgoing correspondence. All incoming scanned and then filed. A hot desk policy which meant nobody had an allocated desk. first in picked first desk etc.
It did not work. His office admin insisted she need all sorts of personal stuff and therefore she must have a set of drawers for her stuff etc. He has won on one account though. No eating at the desks. He has allocated space with comfy armchairs (like the Spanish inquisition), free coffee, a dish washer so no mugs/plates overnight and a microwave etc. where people may eat. That way the main office does not stink of food. No risk of damage to computers etc from tea/coffee etc. The other strange thing he does is provide breakfast for all. He insists nobody skip breakfast and that way they can then work at 100%.

Ed - Good for you mate. They did it here about 2 years ago and took all desk bins away and put a waste bin and recycling bin point in every area. Out of 500 staff I believe there were only two complaints.
One from the FD, because he was a c0ck and his secretary as she is a pain in the &r$e. Since then we monitor the amount that gets recycled and it is an incredible amount that was previously being landfilled. Nobody moans about going to the kitchen to make a coffee do they, we have a bin point there so if you have something to dispose of then take it with you. The same supsects also moaned when we took away desktop printers in 2000 and again when we replaced them with even less printers in 2007.............just because they can moan they do. Ignore them. Oh and earring? What's that about? |
