Default New Rider Advice

Hi Guys,

Just bought a second hand SV650S, 9 years old (W) with just 8k on it, lovely nick too.

Anyway, its my first bike and I havent ridden for about a year since passing my test and pick the bike up next Sat. Have you got any advice for me to minimise the chances of me stuffing it on the way out of the showroom, which would be mostly embarrasing!

Am looking forward to it!

Cheers

Ollie

remeber that when you turn the bars the front wheel turns but the fairing doesn't.
can be misleading for the first time. so i've been told anyway.

Relax, dont worry if people are watching you, be gentle with the throttle till you've got used to it, look where you want the bike to go and not at the 2 foot of tarmac directly in front of your front wheel and finally

Enjoy it

oh dont forget that when you put the thing in gear the bike will stall if you've still got the sidestand down. you wont fall off but people may still laugh. so i've been told anyway.

The first few miles are the worst. Try to minimise the risk by choosing quite roads and take it easy. Always ride at a slower pace than you think you can afford. Things will start to make sense but only by time. Patience is key.

dont be affraid to pull over once your clear from the dealer, take your breath and collect your thoughts. chill out and check the bike over then set off again for your second ride.

This is excellent advice. Stoping after a while recollects your thoughts as my friend says and you'll be calmer once you remount your ride.

Thanks for your advice guys,

I think relaxing is going to be the hardest thing at first! The shop is in Nottingham so it will be a quiet start in the 30s before I have to tackle the A46 (great....) to get back to Lincolnshire!!

Will definately be taking it slow at first, the nerves won't help!

Thanks for letting me know, that would have been embarrasing!

The Sv can stall quite easily until you get used to the clutch. Make sure it's warmed up and if the dealer has a narrow forecourt , wheel the bike onto the roadside by the kerb. Gives you a much easier start off.

Check that everything works as it should too. Don't rely on the dealer saying it does.

Good luck and enjoy.

Oh and don't run out of petrol either.
